Health Institute is a 501c3, which provides leadership in development
of health care solutions to shape the Texas health care landscape. As
an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, THI takes a broad
view of health care issues and their impact on people and their
communities. From acting as a neutral convener and facilitating
balanced health care dialogue, to creating a vision of improved health
care, THI is a think tank - providing innovative, "outside the box"
collaboratively developed options to improve the health of people and
their communities. For additional information, please visit www.texashealthinstitute.org.
Established in 1998 from funds from the Tobacco Master
Settlement Agreement, The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi (The
Partnership) set into motion youth tobacco prevention and education for our
children, some of the most vulnerable in the country. Today, Mississippi is
experiencing its lowest user rates ever among our elementary and middle school
students. The Partnership is also involved in policy work on the state and
local level with tax increases on tobacco, smoke-free air ordinances (92
comprehensive local ordinances) and e-cigarette policies. The programs are now
funded by the Mississippi State Department of Health and continue to change the
culture of behavior in regards to tobacco and e-cigarette usage across the
state.
In 2010, The Partnership used its lessons learned from their tobacco control experience to apply them to the childhood obesity epidemic. Mississippi is consistently at the top of this list and our children are facing a crisis. The Health and Wellness division was formed to tackle this issue and to create meaningful programs that were nutrition and physical activity-based as well as policy advocacy. Funding for our school gardens, garden curriculum, food access initiatives, physical activity and Farm to School programs have come from many sources. Our alliances include The Kellogg Foundation, Voices for Healthy Kids, Wal Mart, Subway Restaurants, United Healthcare Community Plan, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Mississippi State Department of Health and USDA.
The Partnership has become a leader in obesity prevention activities in the state of Mississippi in a short period of time and are looking forward to sharing these experiences with you during the 2015 Southern Obesity Summit and hearing about the wonderful work happening in the 16-state region.
